Top Ten Questions

What are the basic technical requirements for the online classroom? What devices and browsers can I use, and what can I not use?

Please see "The Classroom" section here in the FAQ for the most up to date details on technical requirements.

Can you help my child/student, and what is the youngest age you teach?

First, we want all parents to know that starting your children with a second (or third!) language at a very young age has been shown to have fantastic cognitive and educational benefits. Generally, the youngest students we teach are 4, but we have had a handful of students younger than that. We have all students try a free lesson, so there is no obligation or barrier to trying a lesson with one of our professional tutors. For children 7 and under, lessons are usually shorter 30 minute sessions, but we can always try standard 1 hour lessons.

Can I pick a specific tutor for my free trial lesson?

For the free lesson that we offer everyone, no we do not allow you to pick a specific tutor. If you enjoy the free lesson and decide to purchase lessons afterward, you can schedule with any of our tutors anytime they are available. We do not allow you to choose a particular tutor for your trial lesson for a few reasons. First, all of our tutors are experienced professional teachers, and we are confident in all of their teaching abilities. The short bios listed on our website do not do justice to the experience most of them have. We are very focused on giving all of our tutors all over the world equal opportunities for work. By randomly doling out trial lessons, our tutors get an equal amount of new students, and most students really enjoy their tutor. Even if you get assigned an tutor you normally might not pick, we ask you to please give them a try! Again if you do purchase lessons, you can schedule lessons with any of our tutors.

Do I need a webcam?

No! A webcam is not required, but if you decide to take more than a few lessons with us we do encourage you to purchase one if it fits in your budget (decent webcams can be found for around $25). Even without a webcam you will be able to see your tutor because of course all of our tutors have HD webcameras, they will just not be able to see you. Before purchasing one, try out the free lesson. If you really like it and decide to take more lessons, then you can consider finding a webcam.

Do I get the same tutor every lesson; can I switch tutors?

You have complete control of who you schedule lessons with, after your free trial. After purchasing lessons you can schedule with any of our tutors, anytime they are available. Of course it’s generally a good idea to stick with the same tutor for continuity, but don’t be afraid to take a lesson with another tutor every now and then.

What kind of materials (curriculum, homework/practice exercises, tests) are included? Do you teach reading, writing, grammar?

Our library of materials and exercises is always expanding, unlike many other tutoring companies our independent tutors are constantly creating new homework/practice exercises/quizzes/tests every week. We have hundreds of homework sets in many different formats: flashcards, fill in the blank quizzes, fun “space race” games for kids, and a lot more. Log in to our website and go to the “Learn” page to see them! This is a big advantage many of our students say that we have over other tutoring companies.

Our tutors *absolutely* teach reading, writing and grammar. To become fluent or even conversational, generally you do need to learn these aspects of a language!

How flexible is scheduling?

Scheduling is extremely flexible, we are pretty confident you won’t find more flexible scheduling for one-on-one lessons anywhere. Scheduling and cancelling lessons simply takes a click on your tutor’s online calendar, there is no calling or emailing back and forth. We have built a custom scheduling system that is the most advanced we have found anywhere, all in the name of making as easy as possible to fit lessons into your busy week.

Can I take 30 minute lessons? 3 hour lessons? 5 hour lessons!?

Yes! You can schedule lessons of any length, in 30 minute increments. A 30 minute lesson on Monday, 1.5 hour lesson on Wednesday, and 1 hour lesson on Friday? No problem!

Can I study with my brother, sister, wife, child, best friend?

Absolutely, we have reduced pricing for two students studying together as compared to two students studying separately. In general, this works best if the two students are near the same level of fluency starting out. Over time, what often happens is one student simply picks up some aspects of the language faster than the other. If this happens, your tutor may recommend that you split up after a certain point, but it is entirely your decision.

If I'm not happy, what is your refund policy?

If you aren’t happy, let us know within the first 60 days after your purchase and we will immediately refund you for any lessons you haven’t yet taken. No questions asked, no gimmicks. We can’t remember ever (ever!) having to provide a refund to an unhappy student, as far as we remember we’ve only refunded students who got too busy and had to stop taking lessons because of their schedule. If you’re unhappy though, rest assured we will provide a refund.

Curriculum & Homework

Curriculum - Our Guide to Learning a Language!

What do you mean by "curriculum"?

Our curriculum is your very general guide to learning a language. The most basic piece of the curriculum is simply an organized list of all topics that you would need to learn to be completely fluent in a language. It’s a very general guide that will help you or your students stay organized while studying; you can save notes in your online account about each topic, do homework/practice exercises for each topic, etc. Log in to the website and head to the “Learn” page to see the curriculum.

Is my teacher just going to walk me straight through the curriculum, or are they going to tailor lessons to my individual learning style and goals?

Probably the best thing about private lessons with a professional language teacher is the fact that your teacher is able to customize lessons and your overall learning plan to fit your learning style, goals, needs, and preferences. Whereas in a large classroom setting you just get a generalized lesson, in our private lessons you get individual attention. Our tutors are absolutely passionate about teaching, and you will notice their hard work customizing your lessons; many of our students study for years with the same teacher, and even eventually travel to meet their teacher because they’ve become good friends!

I am (or my student is) already in a class and just needs help with the class!

Not to worry, in this case of course your tutor will customize lessons to your class, you do not need to use or reference our curriculum at all. Many of our students are already in a class and just need help, this is a very common scenario our teachers teach to every single day.

Does the website help me keep track of what topics I've studied, and what topics I want to work on?

Yes! Head to the “Learn” page, click on a topic in the curriculum, and near the bottom of the page you’ll see two buttons: “I need to study this topic more” and “I understand this topic well”. Use those buttons to save and help organize topics that you want to study more, and topics you think you already have a good grasp on.

The "Learn" Page

What is the "Learn" page?

Log in to our website and you’ll find the Learn page. The Learn page is your home for studying outside of your live lessons. You’ll find the curriculum, with options to view only topics you’ve marked as wanting to study more/topics you’ve marked as having completed, a print option, topics recommended by your teacher for you to study next, etc. The Learn page is your home base for organizing your learning outside of live lessons.

How do I mark curriculum topics that I want to study more, and how do I mark topics that I already understand well?

From the Learn page, click on a curriculum topic. On the topic page near the bottom you’ll see two buttons: “I need to study this topic more” and “I understand this topic well”. Click those buttons to save topics that you want to organize for more or less study.

What is the "Notes" box on each individual curriculum topic page for?

The Notes box is a place for you to keep personal notes on each topic, basically an online notebook so that you can organize your studying entirely on our website if you want to. Make sure to click the Save button after writing or editing a note! You can get an easily printable version of all of your notes from the Learn page, just click the “Printable Version” button.

Is there an easy way to print the curriculum, and the notes I've saved for curriculum topics?

Absolutely. You can create an easily printable version of all of your notes from the Learn page, just click the “Printable Version” button.

Homework & Exercises

What kind of homework/exercises are included with lessons?

We have hundreds of homework and practice exercises built into our website, and we’re constantly adding more. They are free to use no matter how many live lessons you take, they’re free to use even if you never purchase lessons! Our students tell us that we have a very organized curriculum and more accompanying exercises than other personal tutors, but please log in to our website and head to the Learn page to see exactly what we have available.

What kind of homework/exercises are not included with lessons?

The main caveat we need to mention that very occasionally comes up is completely customized homework; sometimes students will ask their teacher “can you make me homework specifically like this _____________ ?” In general, our teachers can’t take significant time to make very customized, specific homework just for you unless you pay them for their time to do so. We have hundreds of homework sets already built into the website, if practice exercises in a very specific format are important to you, please log in to the website and check out what we have available on the Learn page.

Quizlet™ Practice Exercises

What is Quizlet™?

Quizlet is an awesome (free) online quiz and study platform, with over one million students and teachers users. We have created a lot of homework sets on Quizlet, and embedded them into our website for you to use!

How do I turn the sound off?!

For the Flashcard study mode in the top right corner of the Quizlet game click “Options”; you'll see an option for Audio. In the Speller study mode, you should see a "Speak" dropdown box on the left side; change the option to "Don't Speak".

How do I change options, like show Spanish vs. English first?

In the Flashcard and Test study modes, you’ll see Options in the top right corner. In the Learn and Speller study modes, options are on the left side of the screen.

With flashcards, how do I flip the flashcard over to view the answer?

Sometimes the instructions are hidden for flash cards; to flip a flash card over, just click in the white space anywhere on the flashcard.

Textbooks & Materials

Textbooks

What textbooks do teachers use?

Each of our teachers may recommend you use a particular book or two; most are around $10, sometimes even a little less. Please chat with your teacher before purchasing any books though!

Can I use my own book?

Yes of course! Your tutor may not have the book that you have, but this is very common and our tutors are adept at helping you with any topics that are in your book. Generally, all topics in your book will be covered somewhere in our curriculum or books, so your tutor will have no problem guiding you through the topic and even giving you practice exercises and homework in addition to what you have in your textbook.

Sending Materials to Your Tutor

How can I send materials to my tutor?

We're currently (late summer 2017) working on a new messaging system built in to our website. Until we get finished, you can simply use email if you feel comfortable doing so to send your teacher materials.

Multiple Students, Groups

Two Or More Students

Do I need multiple accounts?

No, but we highly recommend each student have their own account. This will make it much easier to keep track of what topics you’ve studied, and make sure you can easily get into the correct lesson.

Option 1: One Account

If multiple students are using one account, the most important thing to remember is that your tutor needs to keep track of each students’ progress separately. You can help them immensely by denoting student names and differences in their preferences and goals on the Settings page of your account on our website.

Option 2: Multiple Accounts

We highly recommend each student has their own account. The good news is it takes less than 1 minute to set up an account! On the Settings page of each account, it would be helpful for their tutor if each student listed their goals, interests, and current ability levels.

If you have multiple students and want to share a purchase with all of them, we’ve made that easy too. On the settings page just create a group name and password. More information about this below.

Sharing Purchased Packages

How do I share a package with another account?

We’ve made it easy: on your Settings page, create a Group Name and Group Password. Have everyone you want to share your packages with enter the same Group Name and Group Password on their Settings page, and the packages will show up in their accounts!

How do I stop sharing packages?

You can stop sharing a package at any time. Simply change the Group Name or Group Password in your account.

Information for Parents

Age Limits, Multiple Students

How young should my students start learning a new language?

As young as possible! Research has shown that the younger a student starts to learn, the better his or her chances of reaching native-like fluency.

What is the youngest age that you teach?

We've found that at 3 - 4 years old, many students are capable of sitting for a 30 minute lesson online. Of course this varies depending on a number of factors; we simply recommend trying a free lesson! No credit card required, just schedule a lesson and see how your child does!

Can my children take lessons together?

Yes, two students can study together in a lesson; for these small group lessons, we have slightly higher package prices. We do not allow more than two students in a lesson together; with online lessons, more than two students talking at the same time unfortunately just doesn't seem to work well.

Homework Help, Tutoring

Can your tutors help my child with his/her homework?

Definitely, a large portion of students currently studying with us are already in language classes at school. We can help with homework, help prepare for tests and exams, everything an in-person tutor is capable of.

Can you use the book they are using in school?

Yes, although your tutor might not have the book on hand. Most of our tutors have been teaching for many years, often decades, and they are all very familiar with topics covered in all standard language textbooks.

Full Programs, Homeschool

Do you have a curriculum? One specifically for children?

You can find it when you're logged in to our website. We call the children's section of our curriculum the "Starter's" section.

Can you assign homework?

Yes, in fact with every lesson our tutors send homework/practice exercises. The homework is always optional, but the more time your students spend working on it, the faster they will progress!

Your Free Trial Lesson

Scheduling

Can I choose a specific tutor for my free trial lesson?

If you do purchase lessons, you can schedule lessons with any of our tutors.

Can I schedule free lessons for everyone in my family?

Yes, every single potential student can and should try a free lesson! Please feel free to schedule lessons for each person in your family. If you plan on having groups of two take lessons together, we recommend doing the same in the trial lesson so that you can get a good feel for lessons.

Can I schedule free lessons for every student in my group, class, or school?

Yes, please see our "Schools & Other Organizations" FAQ section for specific details. There are a number of different options for your students and your school.

Preparing

What do I need to do to prepare for my lesson?

The most important thing you can do is read the entire FAQ section “The Classroom”, and follow the instructions there to test your audio and video. You don’t want to have to waste any lesson time trying to figure out anything technical! If you have any problems when you’re testing just send us a quick message in our chat box that you see in the bottom right corner of all pages on our website.

What if I need to cancel and reschedule my lesson?

To cancel and reschedule, simply log in to our website and click the cancel button on the My Lessons page, our scheduling system is a breeze. To reschedule, just head back to the Free Trial page of our website and schedule another lesson! If you need to reschedule, please cancel as soon as you know you won’t be able to make it to the lesson, 24 hours or more in advance. If you cancel with less time than that, we may not be able to provide you with another free trial as we do need to pay our tutors for the time you reserved with them. If you absolutely cannot make it to your lesson and it is within the 24 hours, your tutor would really appreciate it if you let them know; you can do that by clicking the “Starting Soon” button that you’ll see next to the lesson on your My Lessons page.

Technology

Do I need a webcam?

No! A webcam is not required, but if you decide to take more than a few lessons with us we do encourage you to purchase one if it fits in your budget (decent webcams can be found for around $25). Even without a webcam you will be able to see your tutor because of course all of our tutors have HD webcameras, they will just not be able to see you. Before purchasing one, try out the free lesson. If you really like it and decide to take more lessons, then you can consider finding a webcam.

Scheduling Lessons

Scheduling - General

How do I schedule a lesson?

It's incredibly fast and easy! Simply log in to your account, click on Schedule at the top of the page; you'll find multiple scheduling options on the next page.

Can I schedule lessons with multiple tutors?

Absolutely, although it is generally a good idea to stick with one tutor to maintain continuity for most of your lessons, you have complete flexibility to schedule with any of our tutors.

Can I schedule a same-day lesson?

Yes! Our online system lets you schedule lessons 12 hours in advance, so you can schedule a lesson in the morning with a tutor that is available in the evening.

Scheduling Option 1: Reserving Times/Scheduling Multiple Lessons

How do I reserve multiple times/lessons?

We make it really simple and easy, it takes roughly 1 minute to schedule lessons for up to the next 1 year with your tutor! Below are detailed steps to the process, but we’ve made it as intuitive as possible, so try it out in your account and reference these steps if you have questions.

Step 1: Log in to your account, click on Schedule, select your tutor, and pick a day/time on the calendar that you want your recurring lesson to occur. If you want multiple lessons each week, don’t worry, you can pick more days/times in the next step.

Step 2: After clicking a time on your tutor’s calendar, you will now see “Option 1 – Reserve Multiple Lessons”

Step 3: Under this option, first select how many students will participate in each lesson, and then select the date you want lessons to begin (Start Date) and the date you want your last lesson to occur (End Date).

Step 4: Under “Choose Days, Start Times, and Lesson Lengths” now select the days of the week you want lessons. To select a day of the week, click the gray box next to the day. Then, select the time you want the lesson to start and how long you want the lesson to last.

Step 5: Click “Check Availability”

Step 6: Now you will see a page that shows which of the days your tutor is available. Make sure they are available on all the days you wanted lessons!

Step 7: Carefully review everything on the page, and when you’re ready, click “Schedule My Lessons!”

Step 8: Your lessons will be scheduled by our software system. You will receive an email within 20 minutes of scheduling, be sure to read it! There is a very small chance that your tutor may have become unavailable (due to another student scheduling just before you did) for some of the times you have selected, although this is rare.

Do I have to pay up front for all of the lessons I reserve? (quick answer: no!)

No. We’ve created a great system that allows you to pay as you go, even if you schedule lessons for the next six months. As your lessons occur, we’ll email you when you’re running out of credits. When you see the email or notice your credits are getting low, just log in and purchase some more lessons.

Will you automatically charge me for lessons? (quick answer: no!)

No. At this point, there is no option for automatic payments, so when your credits are getting low you’ll need to log in and purchase more. In the future we’re planning on having an automatic payment option, but it will be very clearly marked and you will have to opt in to it (unlike many websites we’ve all seen, where you must opt out of automatic payments).

So how does payment work?

You can purchase lessons in packages, by the hour. To purchase lessons, just log in to your account and click on Purchase. With recurring/reserved lessons, if you run out of credits, you must purchase lessons before you run out of credits. If you completely run out of credits before your next lesson, we will not cancel your lesson; your lesson will remain scheduled unless you cancel it. You are still required to pay for the lesson(s) which have passed without payment. If your payments are late consistently, we may cancel your future lessons at any time, and of course you are still liable for any outstanding unpaid lessons.

How far in advance can I reserve lessons?

You can schedule lessons up to 1 year from today’s date.

What is the cancellation policy?

Please see the Cancellation Policy section of this FAQ to get all of the important details.

Scheduling Option 2: Scheduling a Single Lesson

Why would I use this option over Option 1 (reserving times/scheduling multiple lessons)?

We strongly encourage you to use option 1, reserve times for multiple/ongoing lessons, rather than using this option to schedule one single lesson. It is very helpful for your tutor to know when they are going to have lessons; it allows them to better prepare for your learning progression, helps us keep their schedules full so that they can earn the salary they are striving for by not having unexpected holes in their calendars, and keeps you studying consistently so that you can reach your language learning goals! By far the #1 reason we see students not reach their learning goals as quickly as they wanted is simple: they have trouble keeping a consistent study schedule. If you reserve specific times each week to work on your foreign language skills, you are much more likely to reach your goals.

How do I schedule a single lesson?

On the Schedule page, after selecting a time for your lesson, scroll down below Option 1 and you will see Option 2: Schedule a Single Lesson. Select how long you want the lesson to last, how many students will participate, the package of lessons you want to use, and click “Schedule My Lesson!”

Scheduling Option 3: Instant Lessons!

How do I schedule an instant lesson?

In your account, click Schedule, and choose the Instant Lesson option. If no teachers are currently available, click the “Request Lesson” button, this will notify all of our teachers who are online that a student would like a lesson right now! Click on the teacher’s picture to schedule. After confirming, click the “Enter Classroom” button to enter the classroom. Your lesson will start 1 minute after you have confirmed the lesson.

Watch our how-to video on instant lessons here: click here

After Scheduling

What do I need to do after scheduling a lesson?

After scheduling a lesson, the most important thing to do is make sure you have read “The Classroom” section of the FAQ, particularly the technical requirements. Also take note of our testing page and test out your audio and video!

How will my tutor contact me for my lesson?

You will meet with your tutor in our online classroom, right at your lesson time! To get to the online classroom, log in to your account.

Canceling

How do I cancel a lesson?

Log in and click the cancel button!

What is the cancellation policy?

Please see our detailed cancellation policy in the FAQ section below.

What should I do if I know I am going to miss a lesson but it is too late to cancel?

Your tutor would really appreciate it if you let them know, so they do not wait for you online. The easiest way to let them know is to log in and click the cancel button next to the lesson you cannot make it to. A message will be displayed letting you know that the cancellation period has passed, but we will inform your tutor that you cannot make it.

Purchasing Lessons

Prices

How much do lessons cost?

Up to date prices are listed on the Prices page of our website, as well as the Purchase page when you’re logged in.

Do I have to pay up front for all of the lessons I want?

Not at all! If you would like to schedule recurring/ongoing lessons, you just need to purchase at least a 5 hour package. As your lessons are used up, our scheduling system will send you automatic reminder emails when it is time to purchase again.

Payment Methods & Security

What payment methods are available?

You can pay with most major credit and debit cards, as well as PayPal. For your security, we cannot accept payment over the phone or via mailed checks.

What payment methods are available for schools and other organizations?

In addition to our standard payment methods, we can process any vendor applications your school might require, and invoice for lessons.

Can I use PayPal?

Yes, in fact all of our payments are handled by PayPal, they are the world’s largest and most trusted payment processor. A PayPal account is not required, you can purchase lessons using a credit or debit card.

How can I be sure my payment is secure? Are you licensed?

This is a very important question; there are many online schools that you may find through advertisements, and you should always check into them before making any purchases. First, as described above we do not collect any of your payment information, ever. We are a licensed educational company in the state of Oregon, our office is located in the heart of downtown Eugene, Oregon in the Broadway Commerce Center, Suite 206. You can find us on the Oregon Secretary of State’s website, and we are also a verified merchant with PayPal. Don’t hesitate to contact either of those organizations if you have any questions about our company.

Refunds

I know you have a 100% guarantee, what exactly does that entail?

For the first 60 days after your purchase, we will refund you for any lessons you haven’t taken, for any reason, no questions asked. That’s as detailed as it gets.

What is the expiration period for lessons?

Lessons are valid for one year from the date of purchase. After the one year expiration period, lessons expire and are no longer usable. Please note that our refund policy extends for the first 60 days after your purchase.

How can I reactivate an expired package?

Packages purchased less than 3 years ago can be reactivated and used by purchasing another package of equal or greater value to the hours remaining on the expired package. For example, if you have an expired package that has 4 hours remaining/unused, purchasing at least 4 hours is required to reactivate the expired package. It is important to note that the newly purchased package, as well as the reactivated packages, will all be non-refundable. Once you purchase a new package, please email us and we will reactivate your old package(s) as quickly as possible.

If you have multiple expired packages with hours remaining, that were all purchased less than 3 years ago, only one new package purchase is required to reactivate all of your expired packages. The package with the largest amount of unused lessons is your guide; for example, if the largest expired package has 11 hours remaining, you will need to purchase 11 or more hours of lessons to reactivate all of the expired packages. Reactivated packages will have an expiration date one year from the date of your new purchase. All reactivated packages, and packages purchased in order to reactivate packages, will be nonrefundable.

We sometimes get questions about why we have to have an expiration period, we know it can be a bit frustrating to have packages expire. Most tutoring companies have a 1 month expiration period (meaning you have to take X number of lessons each month, with no carryover), or classes for a set period of time that cannot be made up. Having an infinite expiration period is simply not possible, as costs increase every year with both inflation and other economic factors. We must therefore have an expiration period, and our 1 year period is very liberal when compared to others’ in the tutoring industry. Comparing our refund, cancellation, and expiration policies to other companies, you will find that our flexibility in scheduling and purchasing is amongst the most liberal.

If I miss a lesson, will I get a refund?

In general, no, we do need to pay your tutor for any lessons you have reserved. At our discretion we may issue refunds for certain situations though.

If my tutor misses a lesson, will I get a refund?

Absolutely, you will always receive a refund for any lessons that an tutor misses. While rare, internet connections do go down, and sometimes our tutors even sleep past their alarms!

Cancellation Policy

Policy

Quick Overview

We have designed a very unique, simplistic cancellation policy with two goals in mind: 1.) Make it as flexible for you, our students, as possible and 2.) Make it as fair for our tutors as possible. More than one week in advance you can cancel and schedule lessons however you’d like. During the current week, you can only cancel a total of two hours of lessons. Please quickly read through “Lessons More than One Week in Advance” and “Lessons in the Upcoming Week” to understand the policy below.

More Than One Week In Advance

Any lessons you have scheduled more than one week from today’s date, you can cancel with no caveats. Of course we ask that you only schedule lessons which you plan on attending; if you do need to cancel any lessons though, doing so more than a week in advance will never be an issue.

Current Week

Lessons within one week of today’s date have an added caveat in order to protect your tutor from having a student schedule many lessons and then cancelling all of them at the last minute. Our cancellation policy is 24 hours, up to two hours of lessons each week (a week being Sunday midnight to Sunday midnight). So, you can cancel two hours of lessons each week, but you will need to cancel them at least 24 hours before they start.

Remember that you can always cancel as many lessons as need be, as long as you cancel them one week in advance.

What To Do

How do I cancel a lesson?

Log in to your account on our website and click the cancel button! Unfortunately we cannot take cancellations by phone, email, or any means other than through our website.

Issues

Will I receive a refund if my tutor misses a lesson?

Of course! You will always receive a full refund if your tutor ever misses a lesson, although this is very rare.

Will I receive a refund if I miss a lesson?

Unfortunately no, we do not provide refunds for lessons that you miss. Whether it’s a technical issue, illness, or anything else, we ask you to look at missing a lesson in the same manner as if you missed a lesson with an in-person tutor or class. With in-person lessons, you can get caught in traffic, stuck late at school or work, and a million other things that result in missing your lesson. Most students tell us the ubiquity of internet access allows them to miss fewer lessons than they would with in-person tutoring.

Our #1 goal is to make sure that you have a great experience learning a language with us; if you do, you’ll probably take more lessons and recommend us to your friends. So why have we chosen not to give refunds for missed lessons, at face value it would seem the best way to make our students happy would be to refund missed lessons?

The main reason we’ve chosen this route is: if we provided refunds for missed lessons, we would have to raise our prices across the board to make up for the loss. For a majority of students, those of you that don’t miss many lessons, your overall cost taking lessons with us will be lower because you won’t be paying the higher prices we’d have to charge due to some students missing a lot of lessons. For those of you that miss quite a few lessons, your cost is higher with our decision to not provide refunds for missed lessons; we hope you understand our decision not to pass this cost on to our students who miss fewer lessons. If there is anything we can do to help you miss fewer lessons, like our recommendation for using wired Ethernet instead of wireless, please let us know.

Will I receive a refund if I was sick?

Schools & Other Organizations

Programs

What programs do you have available for my school, business, or other organization?

In short, we can set up just about anything you'd like. Whether you're a small business, a large school district, or anything in-between, we can help you set up a language learning program that works for your employees, students, or members. A majority of teachers find that having their students simply practice conversation with one of our native tutors a few times a week to be very helpful. Our tutors can also give presentations to classrooms on language topics or topics relating to the parts of the world they live in. Let us know what you’d like to try, and we’ll work with you!

Can a LanguageConvo tutor completely replace a language teacher at my school?

Yes, but for large classes you will probably need a supervising teacher to handle classroom management.

I would like to set up a special program for my school, can you work with me?

Absolutely, just give us a call or send us an email.

Invoicing & Payments

What options do we have for purchasing lessons?

Generally the quickest and easiest option is to purchase packages of lessons via our website using a credit or debit card, as most of our non-institutional students do. For your security we use PayPal to process all payments, but a PayPal account is not required to use a credit or debit card. We can also invoice your organization; prices are the same for all of our students, and are listed on the main Prices page of our website.

How can I send LanguageConvo an invoice?

Electronically via email is by far the easiest for us, but you mail or fax works too. Please contact us for our fax number. If you are going to mail us an invoice or other vendor information, please let us know it is coming in advance. Our mailing address can be found on the Contact Us page.

The Classroom

Important - Before Your First Lesson

Update your browser to the newest version available.

We highly recommend using Google Chrome browser; in addition, you need to make sure you have the newest, up to date version of this browser.

Our online classroom uses the newest technologies to create a great lesson experience. To use the online classroom, you need to be using an up to date version of your browser. To update your browser version in Google Chrome, click the three vertical dots you see at the top right corner of Chrome. Then click Help -> About Google Chrome, and you'll be taken to the settings page of Chrome where you can check and make sure you are using the most up to date version.

Audio recommendations — audio is important!

You will notice that all of our teachers have very clear audio; this is because they have an external microphone rather than use the microphone that is built in to their computer. When you do the audio/video test, what you see and hear is exactly how your teacher will see and hear you. If your audio isn’t very clear, 95% of the time this is because your voice is being recorded by a microphone built into your computer, and usually this microphone is of very low quality even on expensive computers. There are a few good options for getting a better microphone:

  • A standalone microphone is a great option, and can be had for less than $10 USD. Search Amazon for a term like “desktop microphone”.
  • Almost all webcams come with a microphone. Most of these are of good quality.
  • Headsets are a great option if you don’t mind wearing one. In our experience, Logitech is one of the better brands but there are many good options.

Test your audio/video on our test page.

Combined audio/video test: click here

(note: must be logged in to your account)
(note 2: a webcam is not required, will work with audio-only)

Before your first lesson, please use the combined audio/video test page, which you will find on the Classroom page of your account. You can use this test even if you do not have a webcam. The most important piece of the test is your audio; if your teacher cannot hear you well, it will be tough to have a good lesson!

Basic video-only test: if you don’t have an account on our website yet, you can do a basic video-only test by clicking here. Please make sure to test your audio though before your first lesson.

How do I get to the classroom at my lesson time?

Log in to your account and click the “Classroom” page in the top navigation bar. There you will see a list of each of your lessons which are coming up in the next 24 hours. Click the “Enter Classroom” button to enter the classroom.

What are some tips to get the best audio and video quality during lessons?

  • The best way you can ensure a great experience during lessons: use a wired ethernet connection instead of wireless “wifi”. Wifi, even on high speed connections with a very expensive wireless router, have higher rates of packet loss and higher pings than wired ethernet connections. What that means is, on wifi, you may experience a little more lag, blurry video, and garbled audio. That said, many students have great experiences on wifi. Give wired ethernet a try if you experience problems with wifi.
  • Tell your teacher if you cannot hear or see them well! They often don’t know that a problem is occurring, unless you tell them. This is especially true with audio. If your teacher’s audio is not very crisp and clear, let them know, it’s likely that their web browser automatically chose to use the microphone built in to their computer rather than the microphone on their headset. Once they change their browser setting to use the microphone on their headset, you will hear them very clearly, just as if they were sitting next to you in a quiet room.
  • Use Google Chrome browser, and ensure it is updated to the latest version. Google is at the forefront of WebRTC, the technology that powers live audio/video chat, and in fact they created the first WebRTC standards!
  • Use a headset or external microphone rather than the one built in to your device. Built-in microphones generally offer very poor audio quality.
  • Before your lesson, test your audio and video on our test page.
  • Try a call with a friend or family member on appear.in If you have problems there, you will likely also experience the same problem on our website as we use the same underlying technology, WebRTC.

Feature to know about – distracting video of yourself disappears!?

About 20 seconds after your lesson starts, the video of yourself will disappear. Not to worry, this is on purpose, and your teacher CAN still see you. We’ve spent a lot of time researching, testing, and simply thinking about one single question: how can we make our online classroom experience as good or even better than meeting someone in person? This feature is part of the answer to that question. We think looking at yourself during a lesson is distracting; if you were taking in person lessons, would you want a large mirror next to your teacher so that you could see yourself? Of course not, it would be extremely distracting. If you need to check and make sure your video is still working well, you can click the icon and reshow your video for a short time.

Basic Requirements

What are the basic technical requirements for the online classroom? What devices and browsers can I use, and what can I not use?

  • Your device must have a microphone, so that your teacher can hear you; a camera is not required, but it does of course help if your teacher can see you. Most mobile devices and laptops have microphones built in, but most desktop computers do not. If you are comfortable wearing a headset, they usually provide a great experience. Most webcams also have microphones built in, so many students purchase a webcam to cover both audio and video.
  • You must use one of the following devices with one of the browsers listed. Google Chrome is highly recommended, and the only we “officially” support currently. Other browsers listed may work, but can have problems and might not work at all on some devices.

    Windows Computer and:
    Google Chrome (highly recommended)
    Firefox
    Microsoft Edge
    Opera

    Mac Computer and:
    Google Chrome (highly recommended)
    Firefox

    Linux Computer and:
    Google Chrome

A Mobile Device with Android Operating System and:
    Google Chrome (highly recommended)
    Firefox

iOS Mobile Devices like iPhone and iPad:
Are, unfortunately, not yet supported. With the upcoming iOS 11, Apple has (finally!) built in support for WebRTC, the technology that our online classroom is built on. iOS 11 is expected to be released sometime in 2017.

Why is Google Chrome browser highly recommended?

Google Chrome is highly recommended, and if you are experiencing any problems during lessons our first question will be “are you using Google Chrome?” Google is the original creator of WebRTC, the technology which powers our online classroom. They have invested the most time in making sure their browser, Google Chrome, implements WebRTC features really well. In fact, other browsers are missing many important features of the WebRTC standard. A great example is automatic reconnection. If your internet connection happens to drop during one of your lessons, Google Chrome will attempt to automatically reconnect you with your teacher when your internet connection stabilizes. As of 2017, other browsers do not do this well or even at all in many cases.

Mobile Devices

Important - text chat is not currently supported on mobile devices. Video is, of course, on Android!

Unfortunately text chat, typing/sending text messages to and from your teacher, is not currently supported in the classroom for mobile devices. This is a high priority and something we are working on right now.

When will I be able to use an iOS device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) to take lessons?

Apple has announced support for WebRTC, the technology that helps power our classroom, with iOS 11. There is no official release date yet for iOS 11, but Apple states it will be available in fall of 2017. You will likely need a new-ish mobile device to be able to use iOS 11. Once iOS 11 is out, you should be able to take lessons in our classroom!
